Gray Whale Cove State Beach

Named for the gray whales that can be spotted from here in the spring as they migrate northward, this secluded pocket beach draws many visitors throughout the year. Nestled at the foot of a small valley, in the area known as “Devil’s Slide”, Gray Whale Cove State Beach is a small, sheltered beach about 800 feet long.

Point Montara Light Station & Beach

Point Montara Light Station is located between Montara State Beach and the city of Moss Beach, CA. The waves crash hard on rocks below the lighthouse grounds, but luckily there is a small sandy beach with access from the property. A footpath leads north from the lighthouse through a picket fence to the edge of the bluff. It quickly splits and the left trail goes out to a point and down to the rocks.

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is a county park and marine protected area run by San Mateo County Parks. This beach is especially popular at low tide because more beach is exposed and tide pools too. The inter-tidal zone here is considered one of the best tide pooling locations in all of California.

Seal Cove (also called Cypress Cove) is a secluded beach in Moss Beach, CA. The cove is within Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and is a real treat at low tide when tide pools are exposed for exploration. Behind the beach are trails that lead into a cypress forest that feels like something out of the movies with long shadows and unique tree trunks. It’s a fun hike with great vistas out over the ocean.

Mavericks Beach

Mavericks Beach at Pillar Point near Half Moon Bay is the site of the annual big wave surfing competition called Maverick’s. From a distance Pillar Point is easy to spot as it has a huge white ball (a “radome” that encloses a telemetry dish for tracking aircrafts) on top.

Pillar Point Harbor Beach is the beach inside the jetty across Highway 1 from the housing community of El Granada. Pillar Point Harbor is entirely protected from the ocean waves by two long jetties. The California Coastal Trail, a multi-use trail passes by the beach connecting Half Moon Bay to Princeton and beyond.

Mirada Surf Beach

Mirada Surf Beach is below a park known as Mirada Surf West just north of the Half Moon Bay community of Miramar. A section of the California Coastal Trail passes through Mirada Surf West for walkers, bicyclists, equestrians, and dog walkers to share.

Dunes Beach – Half Moon Bay State Beach

Dunes Beach is one of the northern beaches in Half Moon Bay State Beach. To reach the parking area turn onto Youngs Road just north of Half Moon Bay on Highway 1. At the end of Youngs Road there is a state park entrance station where they charge a fee for day-use parking (pay with an envelope if the shack is closed). Short steep sandy trails take you down to the beach through the dunes on the bluff.

Francis Beach – Half Moon Bay State Beach

Francis Beach is the southernmost beach in Half Moon Bay State Beach. Francis Beach has a nice grassy park with many of picnic tables and barbecues on the bluff above the ocean. This wide sandy beach below is great for sunbathing and beach walking. The Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail passes through the park and offers you a walking and biking opportunity in either direction.

Martins Beach, located just south of Half Moon Bay, is a public beach in front of a private gated community. The property is surrounded by high cliffs and farm lands so there is just one way to the beach – the gated road.
